A cruise operator retrofitted their Oil Mist Detection system with a QMI Multiplex Engine System.
Within the first 12 months of operation they noticed a change in the readings. The crew had been recording the readings at the start of each shift and noticed the levels were beginning to rise in crank space number 5. The monitor registered an early warning alarm. They reduced the engine load and returned to port to investigate the issue.
They discovered that a bearing that had begun to fail, so they managed to replace the faulty component with no major down time or significant incident.
