Benny Carlson was asked by
his employer Stena Line AB to solve the
problem of cleaning bilge water, in an environmentally
friendly way, based on ideas he introduced
to the company. After many tests he started
to set up a full scale project on board
one of the Stena Line vessels with his partner
Peter Lanzen.
At the time both were serving marine engineers
and so were able to study the difficulties
involved directly. They trialed many variations
over a number of years to discover the best
possible method of coping with oil, detergents,
and the other contaminants found in bilge
water.
From their tests they were able to design
an efficient and economic bilge water cleaning
process that made it possible to return
water to the sea between 0 to 5ppm.
